The short investment of time and the small number of people involved in the Design Sprint process compared to the profitability of the workshop make it a very popular exercise for start-ups and medium and large companies.

Why a 4 to 5 day workshop?

When Google Ventures developed the Design Sprint method, it lasted 5 days. After many workshops, the method and expertise have been refined and it is possible to carry out the Design Sprint in 4 days.

The workshop days of a Design Sprint are divided into sections:

  • Understanding: The first step is to become aware of the problems encountered, to get to know the users or targets who will interact with the solution(s). This stage is also important as it is sometimes the first exchanges with the Design Sprint players. There are several ways to break the ice and allow a relaxed and caring collaboration.
  • Ideation: Once the problem has been posed, the objectives established, the ideation phase allows the Design Sprint team to find the first solutions using several fun and accessible exercises. This ideation phase is accompanied by the decision phase, the objective of which is to vote for the solution(s) that seem(s) to be the most relevant in response to the problems posed upstream.
  • Design and prototype : Once the whole team has agreed on a solution, it is necessary to create the prototype that will be used to test the solution. This phase allows the creation of a user path, low-fidelity models and a prototype that can be navigated.
  • User test: This stage is the result of time spent upstream. It involves testing the navigable prototype with the help of users! There are solutions that allow the whole team to observe the tests live.

When it is difficult to gather the people involved physically, it is then possible to run the Design Sprint remotely. Quop's teams are trained to work remotely and we have the necessary tools to carry out Design Sprints without any physical meetings. If a remote Design Sprint needs to be done, we recommend cutting the 4 days into 6 to 8 half-days to avoid the fatigue inherent in virtual stress.

Who should be present?

In order to be effective, a Design Sprint should not exceed 7 to 8 people maximum. If more people are involved, the possibilities for working together are less efficiant and the time during people make decisions increases.

A Design Sprint must have a Sprint Master. This person will set the pace and lead the workshop while keeping people focused on the initial objectives. In the case of the development of a digital product, the so-called experts are those who have the business knowledge related to the issues raised prior to the Design Sprint. They must be present in the same way as a Decision Maker, which can be the CEO, a Product Manager or, failing that, a Project Manager. This Decision Maker will have the ability to influence the decision making process by casting additional votes during the decision making process.

A designer specialising in user-centred design (UX Design) is also required, as this will enable the development of a prototype and its testing with users while providing an ergonomic vision of the solution.

For a Sprint of 7 people, we have :

  • A Sprint Master or Animator, in charge of the pace of the workshop;
  • 1 or 2 trade experts coming with a problem requiring a solution;
  • A decision-maker whose role is to influence the decision-making process;
  • A Product Manager or Project Manager with a product vision;
  • The product designer (UX Designer) with a good knowledge of product ergonomics and capable of creating a prototype;
  • A Technical Director or Developer checking the technical constraints and feasibility;

The benefits of a Design Sprint

The strength of a design sprint lies in its ability to generate a multitude of ideas with experts. Co-creation is a major asset and allows all levels of the organisation to be involved in generating solutions.

Do I really need a Design Sprint?

If you have specific issues and constraints that you can address by implementing digital solutions or not, then Design Sprint has a real interest.
